Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace Explained

Chantilly Lace paint color is in the green-yellow hue family and has an Light Reflective Value (LRV) of 90.04.

LRV is the scale that is used to measure the amount of light that is reflected or absorbed by a surface and the scale ranges from 0 to 100. 0 is total black and 100 is pure white. The higher the number the higher the reflective value; the lighter in color the paint is

Since Chantilly Lace has an LRV of 90.04 it is pretty close to pure white and it will reflect a lot of light. Since it has some green-yellow undertones, this is helpful to know regarding lighting conditions in a room and what colors this paint might pull in different lights.

How to Chose the Perfect White Paint Color

Choosing a white paint color is on the list of one of the most difficult design decisions to make. With so many shades of white to choose from, how do you know which one is right for you? Although I love Chantilly Lace, how do you know it is a good white paint color for you when there are so many wonderful white paints out there?

I love BM Chantilly Lace paint, but my goal isn’t to convince you this is the color for you. You have to be convinced of that. I’m here to help break down this white paint color, enabling you to make an educated choice and be happy with your paint color.

Tips for Choosing the Right White Paint Color

  • Use samples – Paint swatches and online pictures of paint colors don’t provide all aspects of the color in your space. Purchase actual paint samples or use Samplize to test the paint color.
  • Sample on walls – Apply white paint color on different facing walls in the room paying attention to how these walls look at different times of the day and on cloudy and sunny days.
  • Test lighting – White paint will look differently depending on the light bulb you use whether it is warm or cool.
  • Buy brand name – Color matching whites with other retailers and brands might be cheaper or more convenient, but it is very difficult to accurately color match a white paint color.
  • Prime if necessary – Apply a primer if painting on top of a bold or dark color so it will not influence the white paint on top.

Is BM Chantilly Lace a Warm or Cool Color?

That’s a bit of a tough question as white paint colors can tend to lean toward the cold side. It’s not really cool but it’s also not warm. We have Chantilly Lace in our dining room and even though the space doesn’t feel cold; it also doesn’t feel overly warm either.

Chantilly Lace Undertones

What undertones does Chantilly Lace have or better yet, what undertones does it not have? Chantilly Lace is very white and void of a lot of undertones.

Undertones are merely subjective because not everyone is going to see a paint color the same way. My husband and I don’t really see paint colors or their undertones the same. He is also color blind with blues, purples and greens. Careful trying to select a paint color based on the undertones it may or may not have; you might just not be seeing clearly.

Paint colors look different based on surrounding elements, especially white paint colors. In a room with a lot of windows with bright plush greenery on the outside, Chantilly Lace might look green at times or blue from the reflection of the sky.

You will need to get a paint sample and see how it looks in your room and take in every factor of every element in the space including the floors, cabinets, furniture color, artwork, etc.

Chantilly Lace In a Room

Lighting plays a defining role in the way a paint color looks. It’s not the only aspect but it’s a large part of it. In unbalanced light that’s when you will see a shift in the paint color as opposed to a sunny day at noon.

The four directions to consider in a room are north, south, east, and west. These directions will play into how lighting will look.

Room Directions

  • North-facing rooms – appear cooler and sometimes somewhat blue in tone and this direction can cool down warmer tones. Lighter colors appear more muted, while bolder colors will pop more.
  • South-facing rooms– usually a consistent bright light throughout the day. Warm and cool tones work this direction. Darker colors will seem more vivid while softer colors will almost look like they are radiating.
  • East-facing rooms– brightest light in the mornings, with a yellow-orange tone. If an east-facing room will be used regularly in the evenings, selecting a warm palette will help offset the lack of natural light.
  • West-facing rooms– early evenings these rooms have the most favorable light. Warmer tones might seem a bit strong because of the red-orange tones the light gives off.

How to Sample Paint?

Gathering paint swatches can be helpful as you begin your “find your color” journey, but should not be only relied on for making your final selection. Paint samples are the way to go, but that can get frustrating and messy.

I love Samplize and use it often when selecting a paint color. You order your color and when it arrives you just peel and stick the sample to the wall. It’s great because you can leave it up for a couple days, move it around and see it in different lights to ensure you really like the color.

Where to Use BM Chantilly Lace

You can use this white paint color anywhere and everywhere. Bathrooms, cabinets, dining rooms, bedrooms, trim and hallways. Wherever you are looking for a lovely white paint color to brighten up a space.

In our daughter’s Girl Bathroom Update I used Chantilly Lace for the trim – baseboards, crown, doors and door trim. It worked nicely with the bright wallpaper and the green bathroom vanity.

BM Chantilly Lace on Exteriors

Using a paint inside versus outside is going to have different results. Why? Well, direct sunlight brightens or lightens up the colors. If you like the paint inside; you better test a sample on your exterior first before committing.

Chantilly Lace is great if you want a bright white house as it will look very bright and super crisp. If you want a softer looking white exterior, I would try another white paint color instead. Chantilly Lace on the exterior will be bright; something to keep in mind.
