Christmas Hanging Door Basket
Change out your Christmas wreath for a Christmas hanging door basket instead. A door basket filled with real or faux pine and cedar stems is change from the standard Christmas wreath.
While I LOVE front door wreaths; I also like a little something different too. I do have a thing for wreaths and front door decor. Even in college I hung a wreath on our dorm door to signify the different seasons. My friends called me a preppy Martha Stewart in my penny loafers, cable knit sweaters and loose fitting jeans. Hey…it was the 90’s but crazy how all those clothes seem to be back in my closet. HA

Decorating for the Christmas season starts at our entryway and an easy way to decorate your front door is with a hanging basket. As much as I love a wreath on our front door I wanted something different; more unique. When I saw this door basket (or wall basket) I knew it was just the change I was looking for.

Why a Christmas Hanging Door Basket?
In the fall I swapped out my summer wreath for a hanging door basket instead. I filled it with lovely dried limelight Hydrangeas from our yard and knew I would use the basket for the Christmas and winter season too.
I love something different. I’d had a wreath hanging for forever and wanted a change. Everyone has a wreath so why not use a basket instead? A front door basket gives a totally different look at feel to a wreath. While still incorporating faux or dried pine or cedar branches; you get a look of gathered stems just in a different shape.

Hanging Door Basket Size
The size of your door is going to determine the size of your basket or baskets if you have a double door. My door is standard size single door with the transom windows on the side. I wanted a basket that was going to feel and look large enough without being too big or too small.
If you just have a single door with no side transoms you could use a small basket. I wanted the basket to stand out and not be too small.
This basket (including handle) is twenty-one inches tall and thirteen inches at the widest point. It is also about seven inches deep. I love the size of this basket compared to the door.
Christmas Hanging Door Basket Filler
What should you put in a hanging door basket? Think of it as a deconstructed wreath sort of. The same stems used in a wreath work beautifully in a door basket.
I kept my hanging door basket simple with faux pine and cedar stems and a few pine cones for contrast and additional texture. I added a velvet and striped bow with hanging brass Christmas bells so it feels like the holidays. This Christmas front door basket will take me all the way through the winter months so it’s perfect from Christmas time into February.
You can also fill a basket with real pine stems as well. Using fresh pine or cedar stems would be gorgeous closer to the holidays.
Filling the Basket:
- faux real touch pine stems
- faux cedar stems
- pine cone stems
- faux berries
- small twinkle lights
- fresh pine and cedar branches
- Christmas bells
- tie a bow around the outside of the basket for an eye-catching addition.

Tips for Arranging A Door Basket
Filling a door basket is such an easy thing to do but there are a few tricks along the way to make it easier to achieve a lovely look.
Arranging Tips!
- Unless the stems are super long, place something in the bottom of the basket such as plastic grocery bags to give them height. The bags also help to hold the stems in place. If you have stems that simply will not stand up, try stuffing more bags in between them.
- Use floral foam inside the basket so you can position the stems perfectly.
- Faux stems can usually be bent the way that you’d like them to go. If working with dried stems you are limited to where you position them and how they are displayed in the basket.
- Asymmetrical look of draping greenery or florals is lovely and can be done evenly across the front or off to one side.
How to Hang a Door Basket?
There are multiple ways to hang the basket on the door – it all depends on the type of door you have.
My basket has a handle on the top and I used it to hang it from a door wreath hanger. If your basket doesn’t have a handle just hook the back of the basket to the hook at a good height.
- Use a basket that has a handle on the back side of it.
- Use a wreath hanger as long as the basket doesn’t hang too low on the door.
- Large suction cups are a good choice for hanging the basket on a glass door.
- Tie a piece of ribbon to the basket’s handle long enough to reach the top of the door. Secure the ribbon into the top of the door with a thumbtack.
- Use a Command Hook large enough to handle the weight of your door basket.
- Traditional wreath hangers can be used if it doesn’t allow the basket to hang too low on the door.
