Hanging Door Basket
Change out your front door wreath for a hanging door basket. A door basket filled with real, dried or faux florals is a perfect transition into Autumn.
Decorating for fall starts at your entryway and an easy way to do that is with a hanging basket for your front door. As much as I love a wreath on our front door I wanted something different; more unique. When I saw this door basket or wall basket I knew it was just the change I was looking for.

Every season begins with decorating my front door and then working my way inside. I wanted something a little different for my fall door decorating than a typical wreath. Our Limelight Hydrangeas produced so many lovely blooms that dried perfectly. Since hydrangeas or among one of my favorite flowers, I thought dried hydrangeas would be perfect in this outdoor hanging basket.
Why a Front Door Basket
I’ve been making wreaths for my front door since I was in college. Yes…I was one of those odd “Martha Stewart” wannabe college kids of the 90’s that even decorated her dorm room. In the winter time I would go to Lowe’s and gather all the free broken branches from the Christmas trees and turn them into wreaths. They would then be sold to other girls on my hall for $7. I love a good wreath anytime of year.
I also love something different too. Everyone has a wreath so why not use a basket instead? A front door basket gives a totally different look at feel to a wreath. While still incorporating faux or dried stems; you get a look of gathered stems just in a different shape. Go for something different!

Door Basket Size
The size of your door is going to determine the size of your basket or baskets if you have a double door. My door is standard size single door with the transom windows on the side. I wanted a basket that was going to feel and look large enough without being too big or too small.
If you just have a single door with no side transoms you could use a small basket. I wanted the basket to stand out and not be too small.
This basket (including handle) is twenty-one inches tall and thirteen inches at the widest point. It is also about seven inches deep. I love the size of this basket compared to the door.
What You Should Put In Your Door Basket
Just like a wreath, you can fill your hanging basket with anything you like. Dried florals, faux fall florals or even real stems for a special occasion as they will only be temporary.
I kept it super simple with just hydrangeas but you could add other decor items and stems too. We just happened to have all these dried hydrangeas and I love how they look for late summer into early Autumn. I wasn’t quite ready for fall stems just yet as we are transitioning but wanted to update the florals at the front door.
- faux fall pumpkin stick
- faux fall berries
- real or faux wheat stalk
- pheasant feathers
- small signs on a short stake
- tie a bow around the outside of the basket for an eye-catching addition.
Tips for Arranging A Door Basket
Filling a door basket is such an easy thing to do but there are a few tricks along the way.
Arranging Tips!
- Unless the stems are super long, place something in the bottom of the basket such as plastic grocery bags to give them height. The bags also help to hold the stems in place. If you have stems that simply will not stand up, try stuffing more bags in between them.
- Use floral foam inside the basket so you can position the stems perfectly.
- Faux stems can usually be bent the way that you’d like them to go. If working with dried stems you are limited to where you position them and how they are displayed in the basket.
- Asymmetrical look of draping greenery or florals is lovely and can be done evenly across the front or off to one side. My basket is just filled with simple dried bundle of hydrangeas.
How Do You Hang A Door Basket?
There are multiple ways to hang the basket on the door – it all depends on the type of door you have.
My basket had a handle on the top back and I used that to hang it off of a Command Hook that I positioned on the mullion of the door in-between the windows. If your basket doesn’t have a handle just hook the back of the basket to the hook at a good height.
- Use a basket that has a handle on the back side of it.
- Use a wreath hanger as long as the basket doesn’t hang too low on the door.
- Large suction cups are a good choice for hanging the basket on a glass door.
- Tie a piece of ribbon to the basket’s handle long enough to reach the top of the door. Secure the ribbon into the top of the door with a thumbtack.
- Use a Command Hook large enough to handle the weight of your door basket.
- Traditional wreath hangers can be used if it doesn’t allow the basket to hang too low on the door.

Where To Buy Hanging Baskets
I’ve gathered up a few hanging baskets for you to consider plus the one I used. I love that I can use this for so many seasons and interchange with using a wreath. I recommend using a basket with a flat back as opposed to a round one, which will allow the basket to rest against the door better.
