Updating Outdoor Lights Boosts Curb Appeal

One of the easiest ways to boost your homes curb appeal is updating the outdoor lights. This does not have to be an expensive project either. Lowe’s Home Improvement has many exterior lights in stock or additional styles that can be ordered on line. We selected the Cogburn Outdoor Light and love how it updated our space.

An updated fixture can give your home a fresh, stylish look that feels current and looks well maintained. The back of our property houses our Barndominium that is an Air BnB rental. Since we share a driveway and our home is visible to guests; I wanted our exterior lighting to look nice and relevant. Think it makes guests feel more comfortable when things are updated.

Tips for Choosing Outdoor Light Fixtures

Several factors you need to consider when selecting new outdoor light fixtures.

  • Match Your Homes Style – You need to consider the style of your home when choosing new outdoor light fixtures. Our home is more traditional cottage, craftsman feel so I looked for outdoor lighting that looked and felt too modern or even too fancy.
  • Prioritize Durability – Look for weather-resistant materials like powder-coated metal or brass that will withstand rain, snow and sun without rusting or fading.
  • Select the Right Size – Scale does matter here! Avoid fixtures that are too small or oversized by measuring the space. Follow the guidelines such as fixtures being about one-third the height of the door they flank.
  • Consider Light Output – Ensure your fixture provides enough brightness for safety and ambiance. Check wattage, lumens and whether you want warm or cool light tones.
  • Look for Motional Sensors or Smart Features – For added convenience, select light fixtures that might have built in motion sensors (if needed) or that have smart controls for automated schedules.

How to Replace Exterior House Lights

Replacing your exterior house lights is easier than you might think with a step-by-step approach. My husband usually handles these type of electrical projects to save money but we are not electricians.

These are steps to change your own light fixtures but if you are not comfortable with this please hire a professional.

  • Turn Power off at the Breaker – Turn off the power at the breaker box
  • Remove the Old fixture – Safely remove the old fixture by unscrewing the old light fixture form the mounting bracket. Disconnect the wiring by unscrewing the wire nuts and separating the wires.
  • Connect the New Fixture’s Wires – Match the wires by color: black (hot) to black, white (neutral) to white, and green bare (ground) to the ground wire or screw. Secure connections with wire nuts and neatly tuck wires back into the box.
  • Attach the New Fixture – Mount the new fixture onto the bracket or plate as directed in the instructions. Tighten screw to hold the fixture securely in place.
  • Restore Power and Test – Add the lightbulbs, turn the breaker back on and test the new light to ensure it works.

Outdoor Lights from Lowe’s Home Improvement

If you haven’t realized by now, we are big Lowe’s fans around here. Since we moved to Tennessee a few years ago, we have completed most of the projects around our property by shopping at Lowe’s. When it came time to change our outdoor lights, we just ran to Lowe’s, selected the lights, picked up some lightbulbs and got to installing.

Lowe’s has a great selection of lights in store and online. We decided on their Allen + Roth store brand and I love how these lights updated our exterior space. We added four outdoor lights; three at the garage and one at the backdoor.
