When we remodeled our home in 2018; I wanted to change our worn out leather sofas in our family room. We had them for years and they were in fine shape, but the style was dated and they were dark. I knew I wanted a slipcover sofa so I could clean it with ease.

I had been researching Ikea sofas, slipcovers and custom slipcovers and my searching led me to a company named Bemz. They make custom sofa covers for Ikea furniture and I was SOLD!

Why an Ikea Sofa

Let’s face it…sofas are expensive. They are like buying a car for your living room. Costly, over budget and lose their value once delivered to your door. Add kids, pets, husbands and Friday pizza night on the sofa and you might just as well have bought camping chairs.

I looked for sofas EVERYWHERE! From Pottery Barn to West Elm, and all stores in between. We needed two sofas for our family room due to size and for everyone to have a place to sit. My sofa budget was small and as I began to price out sofas I realized how incredibly expensive they were.

After much deliberating and researching, we ended up at Ikea and finally settled on the Farlov sofa. Ikea no longer makes the Farlov (sad) but they make an alternative now called Hyltarp. It has a very similar look and feel to the Farlov.

I paid $700 for each sofa and opted out of the slipcover that came with them. This helped me save a little money. I loved the style and the price and if something were to happen to them I wouldn’t be out thousands!

Selecting a Sofa Style

The fabric was not important to me, but the shape and size of the sofa was. Since I knew I could change out the cover, I wanted a sofa that had the look of Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware or Arhaus but without the price tag.

Now, all that being said, as well as nice as our Ikea sofas have been; you do get what you pay for. We have been fine with our Ikea sofas, but we have not owned the above mentioned higher end brands. I would say they likely are better quality and more comfortable. Maybe someday an Arhaus slipcover sofa will grace our space. For now…it’s Ikea.

What is a Slipcovered Sofa?

Slipcovered sofas have covers that you can take off and wash. These covers are in all sorts of colors and materials, like cotton and velvet, and you can swap them out pretty easily. Slipcovered sofas are a flexible piece to have in your living room or den. They’re the best of both worlds, giving you the chance to change how your sofa looks without having to get a whole new one.

I’ve rather always loved the look and concept of a slipcover sofa. I’m talking about a custom slipcover; not one of those covers that is a one size fits all and looks sloppy. These covers look like they were made for the sofa because they were.

Slipcovered sofas are a great choice for families with children and pets (or anyone) because the slipcover can easily be removed and replaced when needed instead of reupholstering. If you have kids, dogs or messy friends a slipcover sofa will transform your whole design point of view.

The Ikea sofas do come with their own covers, but their fabric options are limited and personally not my favorite. When I found Bemz slipcovers I knew I had found the perfect solution.

I have worked with another company that also makes slipcovers for Ikea furniture called Comfort Works. They are a wonderful company and I have received covers from both Bemz and Comfort Works. One set of slipcovers I purchased from each company and I have received one from each company. All-in-all I have had two different covers from each brand.

Bemz slipcovers have been my favorite. Each company has great customer service and a wide variety fabrics, but Bemz has a higher end look in my opinion. They have more fabric choices and I like how the covers fit better.

Bemz Slipcovers Fabric

Bemz slipcovers come in cotton, velvet, linen, recycled fabric and wool as well as some new patterned fabrics. I have had both their 100% cotton and 100% linen slipcovers and both have been amazing.

You can select up to five fabric samples to be sent to you free of charge. If you need more than five samples just place another order.

I love Bemz fabric selections and you have many options from 100% linen to linen blends, cotton blends and their velvet is very luxurious feeling. My favorite is their Designers Guild 100% linen. I have the parchment color on both the sofas.

Washing Bemz Slipcovers

These slipcovers are so easy to remove and toss in the washing machine. I have had both cotton and linen covers and they wash up like a dream.

We are not easy on our couches. We eat snacks and casual Friday night dinners on the sofa. Our dog enjoys a nap on the sofa as well. Our sofas are not show pieces; they are used heavily!

Slipcover Cleaning Tips

• Easily spot treat before washing them if needed.
• Wash once every two months; more or less as needed.
• Wash on cold water
• Hang until maybe 80% dry and put on the couches damp so they can dry the rest of the way. This makes it easier to get the slipcovers back on the sofa.
• Wash one cover at a time or sometimes I just wash the seat covers at the same time. Just be careful not to over fill your washing machine.
