Sources for Affordable Accent Chairs
Amazon: You can purchase just about anything on Amazon! They have a great furniture section and with PRIME membership; most items ship free.
Target: I love Target furniture and since they have design collaborations with Studio McGee and Hearth & Hand, you can find high-end-looking furniture and decor at affordable prices.
Facebook Marketplace: Yes…don’t be afraid to look on FBM for accent chairs. Used furniture is always less expensive than purchasing new. Upholstered chairs can be harder to find, but I’ve seen some great chairs on there. You might want to consider cleaning the upholstery after purchasing.
Wayfair: I’ve purchased several chairs from Wayfair over the years. In fact, the blue chairs in our sitting room were purchased there and I love them.
Walmart: Walmart has been stepping up and they have had some great furniture finds lately including accent chairs. Check them out for affordable options too that look great!
Should Accent Chairs Match Your Sofa?
If everything is the same in a room it creates limited visual interest. Think coordination vs. matching. Instead, have a color palette throughout the room that all coordinates together. In our current home, we do not have accent chairs in our main living room due to space. However, in our last home we had accent chairs in the living room.
If your couch is an ivory linen tone you could consider an accent chair with stripes or another coordinating color such as neutral blue or tan. They won’t match the linen sofa but would be similar in style. This creates visual interest.
Should Accent Chairs Be Lower than Your Sofa?
Accent chairs can vary in height, but to create balance, limit the height difference between your sofa and accent chairs to no more than four inches.
That means if the seat height of your chair is 17 inches, the seat height of your sofa should be as close as possible to that. Ideally no shorter than 14 inches and no taller than 20 inches.
What to Look For
Style
Before moving forward with purchasing a chair; you need to understand what style will fit with your home. Determine if you want a traditional or modern style, high back, swivel or a super sink-in comfy chair for reading and naps.
Figure out if you want a high back, a cozy armchair, a couple of lounge chairs, swivel chairs, or maybe a super aesthetic modern chair.
Size
Size is definitely next on the list once you know what style you want. Consider the size of your room, other pieces of furniture and the size of that furniture and how it will all flow together.
Create a mood board to gather a visual of everything in the room. Measure your space and chairs to see if they are a good fit. Select a sizable chair or chairs if the room is a large size. The furniture in the room should feel like it was designed specifically for the room, not a mistake!
TIP: Use painters tape on the floor of the exact measurement of the chair you are considering purchasing so you can get a full visual of how much space the chair will occupy.
Material
Material goes hand-in-hand with style and size; they are all important to consider. I love to be able to keep things clean without a lot of hassle. Chairs will removable covers make it easy to keep the material clean if it is used a lot or you have young kids. If you aren’t using the chairs a lot, they are more for form instead of function, you can use a high end, more fragile type material.
