There is a lot of costume jewelry out there but do you know how and where it is made? Is your jewelry safe? A question you may want to consider.
We are seeing a huge shift to supporting shops that carry made in America products and as a handmade artisan I love seeing this taking place but as a consumer you should know what you are wearing and know if it is safe. Ask yourself: Is your jewelry safe?
Most of the jewelry on store shelves comes from overseas and not only can carry heavy metals but also employ workers who receive very low wages.
Know what your jewelry is made of
In 2018, testing of costume jewelry showed the toxic metal cadmium showing up on the shelves of national retailers including Ross, Nordstrom Rack, Claire’s & other stores according to the Center for Environmental Health.
In the US, rules on the use of heavy metals like cadmium, mercury and lead vary by state and only apply to children’s products. That means we, as consumers, need to start asking where our jewelry comes from.
In lab testing found 31 jewelry items purchased from retail stores were at least 40% cadmium, and most were more than 90%.
Cadmium is not good for you! Even with very small amounts it can cause some concerning health effects such as kidney, bone and lung damage as well as reproductive issues and hormonal effects.
Know Where is your jewelry made
Think your USA based jewelry is safe? Maybe…maybe not.
Two things to look out for:
- A lot of jewelry may be designed in the USA but built elsewhere. There is a big difference. Jewelry Designed in the USA is different from Made in the USA and many brands import their designs from overseas. These overseas factories use of heavy metal is not fully regulated.
- Made in America, can refer to not only the United States of America but also all of North America, South and Central America as well. Watch out for this!

Know where to purchase safe, quality jewelry
At Amelia Lawrence Jewelry I am committed to sourcing our metals and chains made ethically in the USA which are free of heavy metals and toxins.
I hand make each piece of jewelry in the USA, but that’s not enough. I want my customers to be safe; therefore, my 14K gold fill and sterling silver materials are also manufactured in the USA. They are free of chemicals and toxins that may come from lesser quality manufactured metals. Not all sterling silver and 14K gold fill is created equally; a lot comes from overseas.
