Spices are a game changer when cooking, but if it becomes a scavenger hunt to find your Paprika then it’s time to organize those spices.
I like to cook and I want my dishes to be full of flavor. I incorporate spices into my meals to bump up the heat or add some depth. Flavor is the spice of life! Am I right? When I’m cooking a meal I want to easily grab my spices and move on; hunting for them on the third to the last shelf of the pantry or behind some flour is not a good use of time. I’m here to help you organize your spices so you can cook up your amazing dishes with ease.

Let’s get to it shall we?
Determine what you have
Before we can get organized we need to take inventory of supplies. Both what you currently have and what you may need.
Take an assessment of how much space you have for your spices and how many spices you have or actually use. If you have a baggie crammed in your spice drawer with old crusty garlic powder inside you likely need to toss it. Set aside those spices you actually use or will continue to use.
Now find a location in your kitchen where all your little spices will live. They will be happy knowing they have a home and your food might even taste better too!
I recommend a location near your stove so it’s easy to grab. I have one large drawer next to my stove and this is the perfect location for me and all my little spices! You may not have a drawer; you may need to utilize counter space or a shelf for spices in the cupboard.
Toss anything you don’t use. Now, some spices I don’t use regularly. For example, pumpkin pie spice; I only use that about once or twice a year but I don’t want to get rid of it and buy a new jar every year. Waste of money. However, if I have curry powder and I NEVER use it, which is my story, I might consider tossing it if I need the space.
Only you know how much space you have and what you use. Designate one location for your spices and all will be well. Keep what you use and let’s move on to the next step of getting organized.
Create a system for organizing spices
I have the drawer designated now I need a system. Once you know where you will place your spices and what you need it’s time to create a system for organization.
For our kitchen, the drawer is great but just tossing in a bunch of random spice jars inside would still be chaotic. I use this great wooden spice drawer insert to house all my little jars so they lay neatly inside.
So, I am making progress and have all my spices neatly arranged in my drawer. For me, this is a good system.
Here are a few ideas for spice organizers that might suit you in case you don’t have an extra drawer to use for spices or prefer a different organization method.
Shop Spice Organizers
You may like your spices on the counter or on the shelf in your cabinet; whatever works for you. Just come up with some type of a plan. Your cooking and those eating it will thank you.
One time I was making a pot of chili and I use a lot of cumin…but, cinnamon and cumin can look similar if you aren’t fully paying attention. Well, we sat down to eat a nice, spicy bowl of chili and let’s just say the flavors were not what we planned on.
Purchase supplies to stay organized
Now it’s time for the fun part. You’ve done the hard work and now it’s time to go shopping for those supplies that you have determined you need.
I shared a few options above for ideas on keeping spices organized and trust that at least one of them will work for you.
This spice drawer insert was a game changer for me. It keeps everything nice and tidy so I can grab the right spice and keep moving.
The insert worked great and for a while I just stored the spice jars from the store in the drawer, but they really didn’t lay right or they got bulky because they were all different sizes. Plus, it just looked really cluttered and that alone drove me crazy.
Recently I purchased a set of clear glass spice jars and transferred each spice to their own clear jar. Now everything lays completely flat and orderly.
The drawer, the insert, the jars and now the labels. My three part spice drawer organization system for my kitchen. I found these labels to organize the spices and they are not only functional but they are pretty too.
Aren’t these labels just the best? I love how they make everything look neat, tidy and uniformed. Plus, now I can easily alphabetize my spices making it even easier to grab what I need. No more grabbing cumin for cinnamon anymore.
Now I have complete cohesion and it looks great too! Sometimes I come downstairs in the middle of the night and open my spice drawer to see how lovely it looks. When I pull open the drawer I hear it singing the Hallelujah Chorus at me.
Now it’s time for you to get your spice game on and get organized. Trust me, you will love having everything so neat and tidy!
