While you can always take your ring into a jeweler for professional cleaning, it’s nice to know how to clean your engagement ring yourself!
There are few things more mesmerizing than watching your diamond engagement ring sparkle and dance in the light after it’s been freshly cleaned and polished, and it’s only natural to want to maintain that bling.
As a DC wedding planner, I feel pretty confident telling all future brides that their engagement ring will be, by far, their most photographed piece of jewelry. You certainly want to ensure your ring sparkles in all your photos. I’m sharing a few ways to regain that “like new” shine!
At Home Cleaning
If your ring has been dirtied by common cosmetics—for example, hairspray, lotion, makeup, or perfume—a simple at-home cleaning will bring back its sparkle.
How to Clean Your Engagement Ring:
- Make a solution with warm water (almost hot) and dishwashing soap.
- Soak your ring for about 20 to 40 minutes
- gently brush the stone with a very soft toothbrush
- rinse under warm running water.
You can also keep some jewelry cleaner on hand, but be careful it does not contain harsh chemicals.
One thing is certain; using any harsh chemicals or abrasive products can be damaging to the diamond or finish of your ring. These include chlorine, acetone, toothpaste, bleach, baking soda, vinegar, and ammonia just to name a few.
While you can easily dislodge surface buildup and restore shine yourself, cleanings at your jeweler’s will safely remove the hard layers of deep, compressed dirt and debris.
You may find that your ring needs a deep, rigorous clean to return it to its original state. In this case, I’d recommend reaching out to a professional jeweler to drop your ring off for a cleaning. There may be a small cost for this service, but the peace of mind knowing your heirloom is in good hands is invaluable.
Makes sure on your wedding day your ring is at its sparkliest!
I can guarantee your wedding photographer is going to love you when you show up with a clean, sparkly diamond! Trust me, the pictures will be absolutely worth it!
